The University of Tennessee Health Sciences, College of Medicine-Knoxville is seeking a non-tenure track Associate Professor who will serve as the Pediatric Clerkship Director. This position works with the Knoxville UME office and under the direction of Assistant Dean, UME-Knoxville, to orchestrate and oversee daily student activities on the clerkship (e.g. clinical work, discussions, orientation, tutorials, and other similarly related educational activities) in accordance with the curriculum at UT Health Sciences.

EDUCATION: Medical Degree (M.D. or D.O.)

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of clinical pediatrics and teaching experience preferred.

LICENSE: Board certification in Pediatrics. Active Tennessee medical license.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER, COLLEGE OF MEDCINE - KNOXVILLE

The University of Tennessee College of Medicine – Knoxville (UTCOM-K) was initially established in 1956 as the UT Memorial Research Center and Hospital, which also provided the graduate medical and dental educational (GMDE) and research programs in Knoxville. The GMDE programs collectively became the UT Graduate School of Medicine with the formation of the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) in 1991, and more recently were renamed the UTCOM-K with the increased emphasis on undergraduate medical education in Knoxville as well as the statewide presence of UTHSC.

The mission of the Knoxville Campus is to advance medical education required to train the next generation of physicians and dentists, deliver comprehensive and compassionate care with our hospital partner, the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and conduct innovative research that is meaningful for patients and their families. Our college provides training for third- and fourth-year Medical Students, second year Physician Assistant Students, as well as Graduate Medical Education for 11 primary residency programs and 17 subspecialty fellowships. UTCOM-K consists of 548 faculty (258 paid), 245 residents and fellows and hosts an average of 40-50 medical students per month. UTCOMK also provides Continuing Medical Education services for faculty, residents and practicing physicians in our region, as well as Advanced Medical Simulation for students, residents, and faculty.

The College of Medicine-Knoxville, in partnership with the UTMC, sponsors extensive translational research in both clinical and laboratory settings. The faculty collaborates with various institutions both regionally and nationally including other UTHSC campuses, UTK, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and other health science center institutions.


  • Provide ongoing formative feedback to students.
  • Work with the clerkship coordinator.
  • Work with faculty in developing their teaching ability.
  • Objectively assess core competencies.
  • Discuss student progress at frequent intervals with relevant faculty.
  • Work with students who are having difficulties.
  • Review and revise the clerkship curriculum in concert with other Clerkship Directors, the Senior/Assistant Dean(s) of Clinical Curriculum, and Associate Dean of Medical Education.
  • Actively learn about good practices in medical education.
  • Meet annually with your chair to provide a State of the Clerkship Review, including but not limited to: grade distribution across the state, faculty feedback, review of the course evaluations by the students, review of the GQ results, status of recurrent problems, review of the resident teaching, professionalism issues, review of the shelf performance and performance on Step II CK in regards to your discipline, significant curricular changes, etc. Provide a report for this meeting to the Senior/Assistant Dean(s) of Clinical Curriculum.
  • Attend and actively participate in all CSS meetings and be a member of several task forces or ad hoc subcommittees.
  • Collaborate with and report to the statewide Course Director (Memphis Clerkship Director) for any changes, challenges, or student issues in the clerkship.
