JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Researcher 1 supports a multidisciplinary research program focused on understanding the mechanisms of acute kidney injury (AKI), kidney transplantation, and renal recovery.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree. (Doctoral Degree preferred.)(TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years of relevant lab experience; OR Master’s Degree and one (1) year or relevant lab experience. Surgical experience is necessary for this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to manage time and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to think and work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Demonstrates effective listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Technical writing skills for proposal, report, and manuscript preparation.
  • Ability to create and maintain extensive records on research subjects.
  • Knowledge of Basic Research Principles and Federal Code of Regulations for Clinical Research Studies.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

WORK SCHEDULE:

This position may occasionally be required to work evenings


  1. Assists in establishing and optimizing rodent models of kidney transplantation.
  2. Performs and assists with rodent models of AKI, including nephrectomy, renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, and rhabdomyolysis.
  3. Assists with pre-operative preparation, surgical procedures, post-operative monitoring, and animal care.
  4. Performs animal handling, treatment administration, and biological sample collection.
  5. Collects, processes, and preserves blood, urine, kidney, and other tissue samples.
  6. Assists with histological, biochemical, molecular, and functional analyses of kidney injury and recovery.
  7. Maintains accurate laboratory records, experimental protocols, and animal-related documentation.
  8. Assists with data collection, organization, analysis, and presentation.
  9. Maintains laboratory supplies, equipment, and general laboratory organization.
  10. Adheres to institutional guidelines for animal welfare, biosafety, and laboratory safety.
  11. Collaborates with research staff, trainees, and investigators on ongoing projects.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
