The Assistant Director for Sports Programs is a member of the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs team. This position works with the Associate Director for Campus Recreation and other Assistant Directors in creating a vision for the department and establishing strategic initiatives, goals, objectives, action plans and assessments. This position directly impacts student retention and success through services provided by Campus Recreation and works with internal and external stakeholders to provide exceptional programs and facilities. The Assistant Director is responsible for providing leadership and administrative oversight of the UTC Sports Complex, facility rentals, Intramurals, Club Sports, Mocs Adventure Camp, and overall facility maintenance.


The Assistant Director for Sports Programs is a member of the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs team. This position works with the Associate Director for Campus Recreation and other Assistant Directors in creating a vision for the department and establishing strategic initiatives, goals, objectives, action plans and assessments.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 3 years of experience working with students and student groups in a university campus recreation program or 3 years working in a related recreation field (i.e., Parks & Rec). 3-5 years of full-time experience in one or more areas supervised (intramural, club sports, camps).

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree

  • High school officiating or above in one or more sports and first aid CPR

  • Demonstrated experience leading and supervising individuals and teams. Presentation and team building facilitation experience. Membership and participation in NIRSA.

  • Experience fostering a welcoming environment and appreciation of differences in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing innovative practices which accentuate operations and strategic initiatives. Summer camp management experience.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • UT market range: MR09
  • Anticipated hiring range: $56,000


Administrative

  • Assist with planning, administering, and executing plans and goals for Campus Recreation that involve day-to-day operations, special events, and projects at the UTC Sports Complex. Provide input and direction on decisions concerning department goals, objectives and initiatives.
  • Review and revise department and program specific rules & policies. Plan yearly programs and facility schedules. Assist with developing and monitoring overall department budget and ensure department compliance with university fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Serve as department liaison with other campus units when it involves aspects of programs being overseen by this position. Oversee the development and maintenance of collaborative relationships with campus and community partners.
  • Serve on departmental, divisional and university committees. Maintain national organization memberships and attend conferences to develop skills along with maintaining industry and national standards when funds are available.
  • Provide support and information throughout the department's periodic program review.
  • Maintain departments goals, objectives, outcomes, key-performance-indicators, activity, and participation statistics.
  • Develop reports on departmental programs, services and resources.

Personnel Management Supervision

  • Provides supervision and evaluation of full-time staff members and graduate assistants (if applicable).
  • Assist with review of department learning outcomes. Advise Coordinators regarding design and implementation of program areas.
  • Support coordinators concerning personnel issues, program promotion, campus resources, and other programming efforts.
  • Partner with other campus entities to provide support for recreation-related educational efforts.
  • Ensure adherence to risk management processes to align with best practices, regulations and laws.

Facility and Rental Management

  • Coordinate communication with facility management personnel and align work as needed to ensure effective sports complex operations; Ensure that appropriate staff supervision is in place for all program areas.
  • Supervise all facility reservations and rentals for UTC Sports Complex. Collaborate with other departments on events in programming areas.
  • Oversee the daily operation of program related customer service, rental management, and program organization.
  • Ensure that programs adhere to university policy and review scheduling and coordination of all programming at UTC Sports Complex.

Mocs Adventure Camp Oversight

  • Develops, builds, and maintains camp registration. Hires, trains, and oversees all Mocs adventure camp staff.
  • Creates and executes the Mocs Adventure Camp marketing plan Creates system to manage all camp emails and phone calls.
  • Works with EMSA Business to manage all sales and Adventure Awaits scholarship fund.
  • Ensures the camps daily schedule and all logistics are reserved in advance and the ability to manage staff payroll.

  • Ability to successfully perform managerial responsibilities (planning, organization leadership, budget, personnel, staff supervision, program evaluation, facility management, and operations) in a complex regulatory, legal, policy, and political environment.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Handle multiple work priorities and to organize and plan projects effectively
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • The ability to implement a comprehensive program risk management plans.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge and experience of best practices in higher education recreation operations.
  • Ability to think strategically with action-orientation to reach organizational goals. Strong aptitude and skills in managing, analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Knowledge of youth camp management. Experience in intramural, and or club sport programming.
  • Strong organizational and logistics skills.
  • Possesses an understanding and appreciation of the importance of technological applications for effectiveness and efficiency.
