The Carpentry Shop Foreman is a dual role of providing supervision of day-to-day activities of the Carpentry Shop and performs maintenance and repair activities within this area. This department provides maintenance and repair services to campus for carpentry, roof repair/maintenance, painting, and signage in all facilities.

Minimum: Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; six years of experience in maintenance and repair carpentry work; specific craft areas include, but are not limited to, repair of walls, ceilings, doors, windows, locks, and roof systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred: Additional specialized certification is preferred.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervises, plans, and schedules work for the Carpentry Shop (including masonry inspections, roof repairs, painting, signage, and repair of walls, ceilings, windows, and doors) and assures that all assignments are properly manned

  • Inspects work in progress and completed in assigned shops to ensure customer satisfaction

  • As foreman, is on-call for emergency situations on Campus after hours, and is responsible for participating in the on-call list for all non-work hours and supporting other work groups (electrical and mechanical) in emergency situations

  • Assists in providing input to upper management on outside training requirements for shop employees

  • Provides assistance in upgrading employee work skills through on-the-job training and in-house training

  • Provides assistance in estimating type of materials, supplies, and equipment required assigned shops

  • Assists in maintaining shop and employee compliance with all safety requirements, including MSDS requirements, safety meeting attendance, and work rule enforcement

  • Conducts inspections of work completed and in progress, including contractor and design work as it relates to the Carpentry Department, to ensure that work performed by personnel meets quality and productivity goals

  • Assists in development of recurring maintenance program for campus facility roof systems

  • Ensures that the program is effectively executed by Carpentry Shop

  • Assists in the development of recurring maintenance work plans for the UTC Campus

  • Assists in other Facilities Department functions as required

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

Physical functions require bending, standing, stooping, walking, lifting and working in other difficult positions on occasion.

  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 75 pounds and work at heights up to 80 feet

  • Must occasionally work in confined spaces
