The Senior Campus Landscape Architect is an experienced landscape architect professional who provides technical expertise, mentorship, and project leadership for the Landscape & Natural Resources team within Design Services at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Reporting to the Lead Campus Landscape Architect, this position assists with the planning, design, and coordination of functional, visually compelling, sustainable and user-focused exterior spaces across campus.

Serving as a key member of the design team, the Senior Campus Landscape Architect contributes site and landscape design expertise to capital and in-house projects and renovations, reviews plans, and ensures design intent is realized. The position also mentors less-experienced staff and provides guidance on complex projects, ensuring work aligns with campus standards, institutional priories, and stakeholder expectations. Acting as a resource for the team, campus stakeholders and consultants, the Senior Campus Landscape Architect helps translate design vision into functional, sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and engaging exterior environments.

  • Required Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree required

      • Licensed Professional Landscape Architect

  • Required Experience:

    • Minimum of five (5) years in landscape architecture or related field

      • Demonstrated experience in leading large programs of work

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Advanced knowledge of landscape systems, components and construction methods

      • Strong written and oral communication skills

      • Ability to effectively manage multiple complex projects simultaneously with strong problem solving and decision-making skills

      • Ability to influence areas outside the technical area of expertise in a positive way and make actionable contributions to the team

      • Proficient with a variety of software to include AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and the Adobe Creative Suite

  • Other Conditions: Valid Driver’s license

  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture or related field
    • Eight (8) or more years in landscape architecture or related field
    • Five (5) or more years as a licensed Professional Landscape Architect
    • Experience managing landscape architecture initiatives in higher education or large institutional environments

About The College/Department/Division

UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute. The Facilities Services staff provides around-the-clock coverage to ensure students, staff, faculty, and fans have a consistent and positive experience every time they step foot on Rocky Top.


  • Assists with managing site and landscape focused capital projects through programming, design, and construction.
  • This includes working with UT/UTK project managers, UTK Faculty/Staff, external design teams, and external contractors.
  • Assist with site and landscape design direction across all UTK capital projects.
  • Provide design assistance to include, but not limited to, feasibility studies, programming, master planning activities, and signage studies.
  • Perform site observations of ongoing capital and in-house construction projects and prepares written documentation of such observations and works with appropriate parties to make corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Assists in edits to the campus standards and guidelines, including the Landscape Vision & Site Standards.
  • Creates conceptual graphics, illustrations, massing studies, etc., for potential future projects.
  • Collaborate with the Landscape Services unit within Facilities Services to design new planting and planting renovation projects.
  • Provide direction for campus signage placement and installation.
  • Reviews and approves temporary signage requests, including placement of building banners. Provides guidance for the development, relocation, and maintenance of campus sculptures.
  • Mentor and guide less-experienced landscape designers and student interns
  • Share technical knowledge, design strategies, and project management techniques to support professional development
  • Serve as a resource for team members regarding design standards, technical questions, and best practices
  • Encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange within the Landscape & Natural Resources team Contribute to a positive and accountable team culture aligned with Design Services priorities
