This position manages University of Tennessee technology projects on behalf of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), many of which are complex, large scale, and highly visible. It contributes to continual improvement of the project management process and develops project plans within constraints of schedule, budget, quality, resources, risk, and scope. This position evaluates project budgets and schedules; communicates progress to project team members and stakeholders; adapts to accommodate project performance; and identifies, tracks, and aids in the resolution of project issues.

This position manages University of Tennessee technology projects on behalf of the Office of Innovative Technologies (OIT). Key responsibilities include: managing complex technology projects; leading the project team of 4 - 30 team members; developing project plans & monitoring progress; and anticipating project risks.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience:

    • Experience and education equivalent to Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP®) credential.

    • Minimum three years’ professional experience managing IT projects or project management in another field with demonstrated track record of delivery projects on time, within budget & scope, and to stakeholders’ satisfaction.

  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Knowledge of project management principles.

    • Effective oral and written communication, time management, problem-solving, and customer service skills.

    • Ability to manage multiple projects or estimates.

    • Ability to analyze and document project failures and successes.

    • Ability to lead meetings effectively.

    • Ability to hold others accountable for project outcomes.

    • Ability to think analytically.

    • Ability to take initiative.

    • Knowledge to analyze costs, benefits, and feasibility for assigned projects.

    • Knowledge to proactively anticipate and mitigate risks to reduce probability & impact.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, information systems, project management, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum three years’ experience in the IT industry with experience managing IT projects such as software development, system building and integration, data wiring, software implementation, networking, etc.

    • Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification or Project Management Institute (PMI) Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)

  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • An in-depth knowledge of an enterprise PPM software application including all aspects of project management, reporting, import and export of data, and effort tracking.

    • A basic knowledge of IT strategic technology planning

    • A basic knowledge of IT technologies

    • The ability to build relationships at all levels of the University.

    • The ability to mentor others in project management related areas

Project Management (60%)

  • Position manages complex technology projects that usually involve multiple internal groups or involves a number of outside stakeholders.

  • The position is responsible for leading the project team, typically from 4 - 30 team members, defining and assigning project tasks to project team members, defining key milestones, monitoring progress on tasks and total project timelines, anticipating problems and along with the project team helping find solutions should problems arise.

  • The position is responsible for anticipating project risks and mitigation and documenting those at the beginning of the project.

  • This position may track project budgets of tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

PM Processes Continuous Improvement (20%)

  • Participate in the development and improvement of project management processes and procedures.

Project Management Documentation (20%)

  • Creating, writing, and updating project management documentation

  • Creates and edits user documentation for the PPM tool, user documentation on project workflow and internal documentation for PMO staff on PMO functions.
