The Patrol Sergeant performs and provides direct supervision, support, and backup of police and security officers in routine patrol, directed patrol, community policing, and special event activities.
Patrol Sergeant (Public Safety Sergeant – MR09) UTC Police Department, University of Tennessee, Chattanooga
Minimum:
- Requires a high school diploma
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must have successfully completed First Line Supervisor training
- Must have minimum of 2 years law enforcement experience
Preferred: TN POST Certification is preferred.
Supervision
- Reviews reports or other material created by staff to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Provides guidance, coaching, and development paths for staff
- Conducts annual performance evaluations for staff
- Initiates disciplinary action for staff when necessary
- Ensures staff adhere to department and University policy, state, and federal laws
- May be responsible for scheduling and/or overall shift operations in the absence of thei immediate supervisor
- Performs related duties as required
Training
- Provides training on general or individual basis to officers in assigned section
- Acts as a field training officer when necessary
- Identifies any performance weakness of staff which may indicate a need for additional training and coaching opportunities
- Mentors staff assigned to section and other staff at UTCPD as applicable
- Promotes development opportunities for staff
Directing
Directs operations for police officer and security staff which may include administrative staff depending on the assignment
- Receives and relays directives, assignments, and special orders to subordinate staff
- Manages shift or section operations
Communicating
- Confers with University administrators, faculty, staff, students, other law enforcement, court and governmental officials on matters of mutual interest
- Ensures proper communications are maintained for assigned section and other sections as needed
