JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Academic Support Coordinator 2 works with UT Health Science Center, UHS, and external faculty to develop and facilitate simulation-based medical education and research activities. This includes assistance with the development of simulation scenarios, assessment tools, and the operation and management of simulation resources needed to support a successful simulation-based medical education course. This position may also provide instruction to faculty, staff, and volunteers on lab equipment and operational procedures.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, or equivalent in a health-related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience performing comparable duties and responsibilities described above; OR Associate’s Degree and three (3) years of related work experience; OR a combination of education and related work experience to equal five (5) years.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of standard procedures regarding handling of biohazard materials such as biologic tissue specimens.
  • Ability to think critically, have decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to a dynamic schedule.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work well as a member of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide technical instructions.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends. May require occasional overnight travel.


  1. Plans and implements simulation events.
  2. Prepares, maintains, and troubleshoots simulation equipment and materials related to simulation.
  3. Provides assistance with the creation or alteration of equipment for simulation events.
  4. Collaborates with surgical skills teams and faculty to integrate best practices, technologies, and equipment into educational activities.
  5. Provides services as a certified proctor for the SAGES Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) and Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) national certification exams.
  6. Provides curriculum development support to course directors, educators, and external faculty.
  7. Monitors and documents usage data, evaluations, and contact hours through the simulation center’s management system
  8. Expands the field of healthcare simulation; networks and collaborates with other healthcare simulation programs.
  9. Serves as an ambassador of the UTCAMS simulation program in local, regional, and national simulation meetings/conferences.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.
