Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer, UTC Athletics

The Director of Sports Medicine/ Head Athletic Trainer works under the direction of the team physician to care for the health and welfare of UTC's intercollegiate student-athletes. This position works primarily with the football team and supervises the staff athletic trainers who work with the other intercollegiate sports.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum of four (4) years' experience as a certified athletic trainer
- Above includes a minimum of three (3) years' experience as an athletic trainer with supervisory responsibilities within intercollegiate athletics
- Certification by the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
- Active membership in the National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA)
- First Aid and CPR certification
- State of Tennessee athletic training licensure or eligible for such
Preferred Qualifications: A master’s degree in athletic training or related field, including all listed certifications above, and five (5+) years’ experience working with intercollegiate football is preferred.
Supervision of Athletic Training staff to ensure the following:
- Provision of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for student-athletes
- Maintains confidential documentation and record keeping of injury reports and progress notes
- Ensures effective communication with athletes, coaches, medical professionals and College departments
- Provides staff supervision of assistant athletic trainers and interns
- Serves as preceptor for UTC' s Graduate Athletic Training Education program
- Attends practices, home and away contest for selected sport or sports
- Organizes and monitors the maintenance of all medical records, keeping each file up-to-date to facilitate insurance billing and payments by insuring proper documentation for any future medical or legal claims
- Organizes and directs all preseason physicals with physicians and coordinates medical clearance and eligibility for practice and competition
- Facilitates concussion testing for student athletes and other safety protocols
- Manages and maintains the athletic training room, and equipment including supplies and inventory
- Works in compliance with policies and rules of UTC, the Southern Conference, and the NCAA related to medical care for student-athletes
- Organizes First Aid and CPR training for staff and coaches
- Maintains a safe and professional environment for student athletes and department staff
- Coordinates institutional and NCAA drug testing protocols
Provides primary athletic training duties for the football team including:
- Pre-participation physical exams for student-athletes
- Injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for student-athletes
- Attendance at all practices, home contests, and away-from-contests
- Fosters working relationship and contract maintenance with team physicians and hospital
- Fosters working relationships with UTC Head Coaches
