The Facilities Services Building & Grounds Assistant I supports the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) by performing routine facilities, grounds, and custodial services to ensure a safe, clean, and well-maintained campus environment. This position assists with day-to-day building and grounds operations, supports preventative maintenance activities, and responds to service requests under general supervision.

The Building & Grounds Assistant I works as part of the Facilities and Infrastructure team, performing standardized tasks that contribute to campus operations, appearance, and safety. Duties may include indoor and outdoor work and require the ability to follow established procedures, safety guidelines, and work schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to perform physical labor associated with building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and safety guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in custodial, groundskeeping, facilities maintenance, or similar support roles.
  • Experience working in a campus, institutional, or industrial environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic building, custodial, or grounds maintenance practices.
  • Skill in using hand tools, cleaning equipment, or grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and physical labor safely.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and work schedules reliably.

Conditions of Employment

  • May require work during evenings, weekends, or emergency campus operations as needed.

About The Division:

The UT Space Institute is a vibrant research, education, and innovation center of excellence, located on a satellite campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT), in Tullahoma, Tennessee, adjacent to the epicenter of US aerospace ground testing at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). UTSI is:

Building and Grounds Services

  • Performs routine building and grounds maintenance tasks to support campus operations and appearance.
  • Assists with custodial, groundskeeping, and general facilities support activities as assigned.
  • Supports preventative maintenance efforts by completing assigned tasks and reporting maintenance needs.
  • Assists with set-ups, moves, and basic labor related to campus events, offices, and facilities.
  • Operates basic hand tools, equipment, and cleaning or grounds maintenance tools safely and appropriately.

Support and Coordination

  • Responds to work orders and service requests in a timely manner under the direction of supervisors.
  • Works collaboratively with Facilities and Infrastructure staff to support daily operations.
  • Communicates issues, safety concerns, or equipment needs to supervisors promptly.

Safety, Compliance, and Documentation

  • Performs work in accordance with established safety procedures, university policies, and applicable guidelines.
  • Uses personal protective equipment as required.
  • Maintains awareness of campus safety expectations and emergency procedures.
