The primary responsibility of this position is to design, develop, test, implement and document best practices for managing all aspects of the OIT Computer Labs’ infrastructure including technical, logistical, staffing, and asset management. Position will be responsible for gathering and analyzing relevant data and performing systematic analysis to identify problems and implement innovative solutions. May function as the lead on any size project. Work is completed with little to no oversight, and overall accuracy and quality is expected.

Required Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Experience:
    • Three years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Experience in IT support, computer lab management, or a similar role within an educational or technical setting. This should include hands-on work with hardware/software deployment, troubleshooting, and maintaining lab environments to ensure reliability and user satisfaction
    • Broad knowledge of the current IT industry including a wide variety of hardware, software and operating systems
    • Knowledge and utilization of lab-centric utilities such as DeepFreeze, Keyserver, etc., or their equivalents
    • Strong organizational & logistical skills with attention to detail
    • Strong leadership skills with experience managing staff
    • Ability to analyze data, form conclusions and quickly modify processes in a constantly changing IT environment
    • Ability to act as project lead or mentor on any size project
    • Ability to develop documentation and training
    • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
    • Excellent oral & written communication skills
    • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • Five years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Advanced Knowledge of lab-centric utilities such as DeepFreeze, Keyserver, etc.
    • Advanced Knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications
    • Demonstrated webpage development

Work Location

  • Location: Knoxville, TN
  • Fully Onsite with occasional opportunity for remote work

Compensation and Benefits

  • UT market range: MR14
  • Anticipated hiring range: $74,000 - $86,000
  • Benefits include: Health Insurance, Holidays and various paid leave

About The College/Department/Division

The Office of Innovative Technologies (OIT) seeks to support the university’s mission by providing customer driven IT services in a consistent and credible manner.


  • Ensures both OIT and departmental computer labs are stable, available, and reliable to meet the evolving academic needs of students and faculty.
  • Defines qualifications for lab configurations, tests and evaluates configurations, and resolves issues before deploying to campus.
  • Researches, analyzes, and tests newer technologies for developing and implementing solutions to ensure labs will meet changing academic requirements.
  • Leads annual project team to coordinate and deploy hardware and software upgrades in labs ensuring upgrades are performed efficiently and with minimal disruption to end users.
  • Documents and publishes both internal and external instructions used for maintaining labs, which include procedural, operational, and departmental policies.
  • Continually maintains and resolves hardware and software issues including securing printers against external breaches.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, mentors, and develops staff.
  • Creates, evaluates and modifies work processes as needed.
  • Ensures work processes and departmental policies are documented and communicated internally and externally.
  • Ensures adherence to all labor rules especially those involving student employees.
  • Creates and provides training and technical documentation for staff and users.
  • Reviews and documents staff performance, developing performance plans and additional training as needed.
  • Creates and maintains database of hardware and software configurations for both OIT and departmental labs, subject to annual auditing.
  • Gathers and analyzes utilization data to identify trends for software, hardware and general lab usage.
  • Creates reports for and makes budget recommendations to management.
  • Documents and updates internal and external lab web pages.
  • Manages all lab procurement and liaises with vendors to develop a mutually beneficial relationship.
  • Leads any size project.
