The Senior Welder is responsible for welding in the construction, installation, modification, and repair of the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s plumbing, sewer, storm sewer, gas, steam infrastructure facilities, hand rails, platforms, and other welding needed and to ensure the continued safe and reliable distribution and discharge of utility pipe lines to the Campus. The Senior Welder performs and coordinates welding activities using heliarc, shielded metal arc, and oxy-acetylene welding equipment. The position is responsible for welding on various materials including high pressure steam lines and for general campus repairs.

Required Qualifications
- Education
- Vocational or technical training in Welding or Pipefitting
- Experience: Must have Five (5) years or more in welding and three (3) years in pipe welding or equivalent combination of relevant education, training and/or experience. Experience may be substituted for education a year-to-year basis. (For example, 2 years of vocational training in welding would count as 2 years of welding experience.)
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Technical knowledge and understanding of welding techniques and equipment, piping systems and equipment and related areas of work.
- Position requires the ability to organize, prioritize and perform under extreme pressure in both a public contact and internal departmental capacity.
- The ability to work with peers in the performance of their duties in a highly technical and sometimes hazardous and hectic environment.
- Ability and the willingness to follow instructions and learn from peers.
- Skills and abilities to understand technical problems in the welding and repair of plumbing and piping systems and components.
- Skills in the use of all welding equipment and tools associated with welding work.
- Ability to interact with others in an efficient and responsible manner.
- Ability to determine materials and resources needed to complete work assignments.
- Other Conditions: Valid Driver’s license

About The College/Department/Division
UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute. The Facilities Services staff provides around-the-clock coverage to ensure students, staff, faculty, and fans have a consistent and positive experience every time they step foot on Rocky Top.
- Performs the welding, installation, and repair of all campus owned underground utilities including high pressure steam distribution, low pressure steam for building heat, condensate and domestic water, chilled water for cooling, gas, sewer, and storm sewers.
- Acquires a deeper understanding of pipe systems, supports, and related equipment for operations and testing.
- Must know the system operation, handle the assessment, and be able to diagnosis, repair, and replace all piping systems according to specifications.
- Must be able to weld in all positions.
- Must have the knowledge of operation and utility systems as a whole.
- Must know the University's utility systems and structure as well as internal and external building systems.
- Perform the installation of new equipment and repair of existing equipment on campus including gas fire domestic water boilers, gas fired water heaters, steam water heaters, storm quality units, water service lines, sewer lines, fire hydrants, Geothermal systems, hazardous chemical systems, heat converter for building heat, building heat water pumps, chillers, chiller piping, water fountains and bottle fillers.
- Responsible for assisting other Facilities Services units and campus departments or colleges with issues outside of their expertise and provide support with major plumbing or steam jobs as well as special projects such as low flow and hands-free fixtures.
- Report job information to supervision and/or Senior Plumber over on-going work.
- Report any unsafe practices or conditions and makes corrections as directed.
- Acquire materials needed for day to day work assignments.
- Performing Preventive Maintenance (PM) on piping and steam equipment
