Assists Air Conditioning Foreman and mechanics in the performance of their duties. Provides support to other areas of Facilities services as requested. Mentors Junior Heavy Duty Mechanics helping to advance their abilities and to increase their knowledge and efficiency. Reads and interpret blueprints, data, and schematics and evaluates system operational conditions. Proficient in making repairs or adjustments and in evaluating the needs of each system to maintain critical heating and cooling systems on campus. Understands operational and repair techniques for all aspects of heavy-duty refrigeration equipment and is able to maintain such equipment as required. Calibrates, installs and repairs all type controls and other devices, fabricates and installs equipment as needed, understands heavy rigging techniques required to perform work in a safe manner. Maintains familiarity with OSHA requirements. Assist other utilities groups or disciplines in the performance of their duties.

Required Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- EPA refrigerant handling certificate
- Experience:
- Six years of experience or trade school and experience. Note: Education may be substituted for experience on a year-to-year basis
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Must be proficient in the ability to understand standard refrigeration and air conditioning equipment operations and safety protocols.
- Familiar with OSHA standards for all aspects of work including rigging techniques for the safe removal and installation of equipment and with operational safety requirements.
- Excellent mechanical knowledge and skills for service and repair of HVAC systems and other related equipment systems. Must have the skill to troubleshoot Electrical and Life Safety systems.
- Ability to maintain a good attendance record.
- Ability to follow given instructions and keep proper records.

- Valid Driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Education:
- Vocational/Technical training or Associates Degree.

Experience:
8 years of experience or trade school and experience. Note: Experience can be substituted for training on a year for year basis.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Proficiency in all skills required for installing, servicing, or repairing HVAC systems including but not limited to the ability to overhaul, maintain, operate and adjust any type of heavy-duty HVAC equipment including related controls, pumps, heat exchangers, cooling towers, chillers, air compressors, vacuum pumps, and other related equipment.
EPA refrigerant certificate.

About the Department
UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute. The Facilities Services staff provides around-the-clock coverage to ensure students, staff, faculty, and fans have a consistent and positive experience every time they step foot on Rocky Top.
- Assists Foreman and less experienced mechanics with monitoring, repairing, installing air conditioning, heating and other mechanical systems on campus.
- Monitors and corrects any deficiencies in HVACR systems as directed or required.
- Understand the type and purpose of each system used to maintain the buildings and areas of the entire campus.
- Report job information to supervision including any system repairs or deficiencies found and the parts and/or materials needed to correct the condition.
- Report and correct any unsafe practices or conditions and inform supervision.
- Assist and fill-in for foreman when required in his absence.
Study technical materials and repair manuals to increase knowledge of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems used on campus and the safety protocols needed for safe operation of all systems.
