Job Description
The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design invites applications for the position of IT Technician. This role reports to the Director of IT for the College and provides first level of support for IT support with appropriate escalation to second level of support when necessary. The IT Technician plays a key role in the evolution and success of the college, working collaboratively with the director to ensure effective and efficient operations for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and visitors.
Responsibilities
End User Support:
- Provides direct end-user technology support for the College of Architecture and Design.
- Performs hardware warranty and non-warranty repairs of desktops, laptops, and printers.
- Provides onsite and report diagnoses of Windows and Apple operating system.
- Diagnoses software and hardware incompatibility.
- Assists in operations of all college printing services, including student self-service printing, departmental full-service printing, and faculty / staff printing.
- Trains users on basic operation and maintenance of College IT Systems.
- Works with faculty and staff on IT related projects and makes recommendations for purchases.
- Provides Audio/video support for classes and events.
- Collaborates and coordinates with internal and external stakeholders as needed.
IT Administration:
- Performs system imaging and deployment of college owned IT systems
- Provides technical and installation support for a variety of IT related issues, including but not limited to, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office Windows and Mac, Adobe Creative Cloud, Autodesk, Rhino.
- Assists in managing the CoAD Cluster.
- Assists in managing system images and VMs.
- Consults and coordinates with Faculty/Staff on IT needs for special projects.
- Maintains an inventory of parts to ensure minimal down time for IT and Print systems.
- Acts as backup for IT Admin when possible.
- Perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance and regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on all equipment
Administrative:
- Assist with IT inventory and manages equipment checkout requests
- Creates and maintains documentation in support of IT activities
- Supervise and mentor student employees when applicable
- Monitors and works IT ticket queue in College ticket system
Afterhours Work:
- Assists in management of all college printing services, including student self-service printing, departmental full-service printing, and faculty / staff printing.
- Monitor and maintain printer supplies including paper, toner, and ink to ensure uninterrupted operation.
- Perform routine checks on printer supply levels and coordinate replenishment as needed.
- Performs on call duties in support of the colleges print system with the goal of 24x7 uptime
- Maintain a clean work area and assist with shipping/deliveries.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of IT and IT Admin.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: High School Diploma
- Experience: 2 years of IT-related work experience
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of desktop and laptop computer hardware configuration, installation, diagnostics, and repair.
- Capable of building professional relationships with diverse groups of people.
- Ability to work in a team environment, multi-task, meet deadlines, and work with detailed information.
- Familiarity with a multiplicity of operating systems and supporting integrated and embedded hardware
- Knowledge of FERPA and other PII privacy and PCI security concepts.
- Knowledge of Autodesk, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud
Preferred
- Education: Associate’s degree
- Experience: 3-5 years of professional IT related experience in a higher education or print shop environment.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Skills in both small-format printer and large-format plotter configuration, installation, diagnostics, and repair.

The College
The College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) is one of 14 academic colleges at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Research-1, land-grant university that houses 900+ programs of study. CoAD is situated in both the award-winning Art + Architecture Building on the UTK campus and the FabLab, which is a 20,000 square-foot facility located in town on North Gay Street. The college is currently poised to undertake an historic expansion which will extend CoAD’s footprint to two additional buildings located close to the FabLab in Knoxville’s Old City.
