Job Description
The Counselor provides counseling to students, and consultation to faculty, staff and the community, through individual, couples, family, group & crisis counseling for the benefit of the campus community. The individual in this position will assess individuals for risk of self-harm, harm to others, diminished capacity, and risk to the campus community.
This position collaborates with Counseling Center staff, provides consultation to faculty/staff from outside departments, and conducts outreach and mental health education to the campus community. This position may provide mediation services for students when deemed necessary.
This position must maintain appropriate licensures, certifications, and continuing education to maintain a knowledge base of best practices in the field. This position may provide supervision to student interns, as designated by the Counseling Center director. If this position provides supervision to post-master's degree clinicians, the individual must be in compliance with the supervision licensure laws designated by the state of Tennessee.
Responsibilities
Counseling Services
- Provides ongoing support services, such as counseling or psychoeducational interventions, for students to facilitate readiness and success on the college campus, thereby improving retention rates for all students, particularly those at risk of dropping out
- Engages students with decisions that can impact personal and academic success during matriculation and beyond
Crisis Assessment & Support
- Performs Suicidal/ Homicidal and Diminished Capacity assessment and referral for students/university staff
- Provides crisis consultation and crisis support as needed
Administrative Services
- Performs liaison/coordination duties as assigned
- Makes recommendations regarding expenditures for Counseling Center resources, training, travel expenses, media and electronic resources, assessments, and information management systems
- Provides individual supervision and complete evaluations for practicum/internship students as assigned by the Director
- Participates in search committees and staff hiring as needed
- Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings with clinical staff
- Collaborates with campus resource partners (e.g., Student Outreach and Support) to support continuation of care for students
Outreach & Education
- Promotes and provides education about mental health services to the campus community, prospective students and families, and alumni
- Works with partners in Enrollment Management and Student Affairs to promote mental health services to prospective and current students and parents/caregivers

- Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess and negotiate complex, highly sensitive situations
- Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle complex issues of extreme sensitivity
- Skill in writing concise, logical, analytical reports to convey complex issues
- Strong and effective interpersonal skills; the ability to listen well and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for individual needs
- Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress
- Ability to adapt to evolving challenges and unique student needs
- Ability to establish and maintain professional and productive working relationships with staff at all levels at the University
- Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators) with diplomacy and tact
- Demonstrated experience working with individuals who may be in distress and/or handling difficult interactions
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills
- Excellent presentation and training skills
- Flexibility with treatment planning and willingness to collaborate with internal and external colleagues to coordinate optimal wellness support

Qualifications
Minimum: Requires a master’s degree in counseling psychology, counselor education, or social work; at least one year of social work and mental health counseling; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred: Licensed as a professional counselor, psychologist, clinical social worker, or marriage and family therapist; experience in college counseling, experience working with individuals with learning disabilities, autism spectrum d/o, or severe mental illness, and experience providing crisis intervention is preferred.
