Job Description

The Facilities Services Department is responsible for the maintenance and operations of all campus facilities; which includes buildings, grounds, and utility systems. The Senior Electrician installs and maintains the electrical systems and equipment for the entire campus. They inspect equipment on a regular basis in order to maintain the safety of students, staff, and the general public. They will also work special events and fill in for the Foreman as needed. This position provides good customer service to internal and external customers. This position will include training other personnel on electrical processes and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Install, diagnose and repair electrical systems and related electrical components.
  • Make skillful decisions based on knowledge and experience.
  • Performs diagnostics, to maintain or repair all electrical components and ensure reliable operation of all campus buildings electrical safety systems.
  • Be available for overtime and emergency response if needed to support campus electrical systems and prevent interruptions of service.
  • Training of fellow staff on systems and wiring layouts.
  • Interact with students, faculty, staff, and the general public in a courteous, professional, and inclusive manner.
  • Studying blueprints, taking off materials, and ordering materials for projects and work orders.
  • Planning work, assisting and filling in for foreman, instructing junior personnel in the use of tools and materials.
  • Report job information to supervision including any repairs, issues, deficiencies, needed parts to correct the assigned problem on lighting and all electrical systems.
  • Report any unsafe practices or conditions discovered in a timely manner.
  • Study technical manuals and equipment information to improve knowledge and understanding of all the campus electrical systems and associated equipment.
  • Take available classes on-line and from vendors to stay up to date on the latest maintenance and control strategies and technology.
  • Be available to take classes not on campus.
  • Complete training to maintain and update skills.
  • Assist contractors, other shops, and to be able to instruct and assist Facility Services personnel in proper procedures and daily work of electrical systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Vocational or technical training. Industrial Electrical Systems Maintenance
  • Experience: 5-years of experience as an electrician. Experience leading and training others in the performance of the craft. Experience in the use of all craft tools, techniques and equipment. Experience working with other crafts. Education may be substituted for experience on a year-to-year basis.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • A good working knowledge of all parts of electrical and wiring diagrams and system loads.
    • The ability to read blueprints.
    • The ability to work on live electrical and electronic systems when necessary.
    • The ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, under adverse conditions, and in high places.
    • The ability to perform hard physical work for long periods and to lift, pull and push heavy loads.
    • Good hand and eye coordination and mechanical aptitude. Knowledge of electrical and safety codes. The ability to work with and train others on related systems.
  • Other Conditions: Valid Driver’s license

UT Facilities Services is responsible for the care and keeping of more than 300 facilities and utilities systems in and around Knoxville. As the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s largest non-academic department, team members are responsible for facilities maintenance and repair, custodial needs, landscaping and lawncare, utility work, in-house and capital construction projects, facilities planning and design, environmental initiatives, pest control, campus event services, and facilities administration functions for both the flagship campus and the agricultural institute.
