Job Description

The Police Officer will actively engage in proactive patrol of the campus, on foot or with a vehicle, to maintain safety and security of university property and individuals. The officer will enforce state criminal laws, federal guidelines, and university policy with a variety of response options.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with and enforces Tennessee criminal statutes, Federal guidelines, and University and departmental policies for law enforcement
  • Tasked with the safety and security functions related to the University community
  • Patrols the University jurisdiction, at times with a vehicle, to provide assistance, visible presence, respond to calls for service, responding to various alarms, and law enforcement activities
  • Uses discretion and critical thinking in the areas of de-escalation, use of force, investigations, citations, referrals and physical arrests
  • Tasked with effective communication in preparing reports, addressing various individuals, and being an attentive listener
  • Completes various administrative and clerical tasks
  • Ensures timely and accurate reporting for proper data capture and required reporting notifications
  • Maintains daily reports, activity logs, and provides information to partners and campus administration
  • Utilizes a reporting management system to submit designated reports as required by University, State and Federal guidelines
  • Provides community engagement and mentoring in the University community
  • Provides services beyond the law enforcement role, such as property and personal transport
  • Participates in education opportunities among the various members of the University community
  • Participates in a security presence in university functions such as graduation, convocation, special events, and partner group events

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Previous law enforcement, security or criminal justice knowledge, skill, or experience

Qualifications

Minimum: Requires a high school diploma and must be 21 years of age.

  • Candidate will be required to pass all Tennessee P.O.S.T. certification, physical fitness, and knowledge training to lawfully enforce criminal statutes and serve as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • The candidate must have the ability to demonstrate proficiency in law enforcement standards such as legal and constitutional knowledge, firearm qualification, vehicle use and operations. These skills must be met and maintained throughout the employment.

Preferred Qualifications: TN P.O.S.T. law enforcement certification is preferred. Experience in law enforcement, security, or criminal justice; or other related experience may be considered in the social services, communications, customer/public services, and/or public safety areas.
