The Assistant Racing Secretary is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operation of the Racing Office. In addition, the team member may be responsible for overseeing the operation of the Racing Office, direct involvement with the horsemen, and racing department team members in the absence of the Director of Racing. Other responsibilities include:

  • Take entries for races, proofing the eligibility of horses entered in races, get the races set to be drawn and oversee the drawing of races.

  • Assist the Racing Secretary with the extras races to be listed on the Overnights.

  • Coordinate early closing stakes nominations; take nominations for stakes and post them at closing.

  • Assure a safe, fair, and efficient workplace environment for all team members.

  • All other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma and College experience required.

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in racetrack industry at a management level.

  • Excellent verbal, mathematics, interpersonal, communication and writing skills.

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, offer recommendations, decision making, ability to make quick accurate decisions independently.

  • Extensive equine knowledge, types of racing and all racing industry requirements.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older and be able to obtain an Indiana Horse Racing Commission License.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this job at a Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing facility.

Horseshoe Indianapolis is a smoking establishment, therefore must be able to work in a smoking environment. Must be able to work in a highly populated, fast-paced, and noisy environment. Must be able to work in an environment subject to cold and/or hot temperatures, rain, wind, sun, dust, animals, insects, etc.


The Assistant Racing Secretary works with the Director of Racing and the Racing Officials to ensure the races fill, the horses are eligible and sets the races to be drawn.
